Celebrating the Life of Sir Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill (1874–1965) was a British statesman, soldier, writer, and prime minister who led Britain during World War II. Born into an aristocratic family, he entered politics as a Conservative MP before switching to the Liberal Party and then later returning to the Conservatives.

Churchill is best known for his leadership during WWII, where he became Prime Minister in 1940. His speeches and radio broadcasts rallied the British people during the darkest days of the war, famously declaring, "We shall fight on the beaches." His firm resolve helped Britain resist Nazi Germany, ultimately contributing to the defeat of Hitler.

Aside from his wartime leadership, Churchill had a long career in government, serving in various roles, including First Lord of the Admiralty during World War I, where he helped develop the strategy for the Gallipoli Campaign. He was also instrumental in shaping British policy during the interwar and after the war.

Churchill was a prolific writer, producing works on history, politics, and war. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his historical writings. He was also a key figure in the formation of the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. He played a significant role in the establishment of the United Nations after the war.

His achievements include preserving British sovereignty during WWII, shaping the post-war world order, and influencing global politics for decades. Churchill's legacy as a steadfast leader during times of crisis remains one of the most enduring aspects of his life.

Kensington Mint presents the Celebrating the Life of Sir Winston Churchill Commemorative Set, featuring three coins that pay homage to our wartime figurehead. This exclusive set draws together three coins – the 1874 Penny, the 1965 Winston Churchill Crown, and the 2015 Winston Churchill Fine Silver £20, each representing a pivotal moment in Churchill's life and legacy.

1874 Penny

The 1874 Penny, or "Bun Penny," was introduced to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill’s year of birth. The obverse has a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria wearing her hair in a bun, hence the coin’s name, but also symbolising the elegance and refinement of the Victorian era into which Churchill was born. The reverse shows Britannia with a trident and shield, representing Britain's wartime naval strength and imperial reach in the 19th century. Aside from marking Churchill’s birth year, this coin therefore also perfectly captures the national context that shaped Churchill’s formative years.

1965 Winston Churchill Crown

Minted shortly after Churchill's death, the 1965 Crown represents the significant respect and admiration that the United Kingdom held for its wartime figurehead. The coin’s unique design comes from sculptor Oscar Nemon and features a resolute portrait of Churchill. The obverse face features Mary Gillick’s youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Crucially, this was the first British coin to be minted with a non-royal individual on the face, highlighting Churchill's significant impact on British history.

2015 Winston Churchill Fine Silver £20

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Churchill's death, the 2015 Fine Silver £20 coin renews the nation’s ongoing respect for the leader’s legacy. The reverse design was inspired by Yousuf Karsh's iconic 1941 photograph of Churchill during Britain's darkest hours. Struck in fine silver, this coin not only honors Churchill’s memory but should also appeal to collectors interested into the nation’s history.

Kensington Mint’s Sir Winston Churchill Commemorative Set offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of history, particularly during a tumultuous era that shaped the course of the 20th century.
