How many of the unique Silver Jubilee Crown coins were produced to commemorate the Queen's coronation's 25th anniversary and are they still valuable? In our guide to this 1977 coin, learn more.

In 1977, The Royal Mint created a commemorative crown to honour Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, which recognised her 25 years as monarch.
One of the coins was given to many British students by their schools, and several others also purchased one to commemorate the event.

The Silver Jubilee Crown's style
The coin's obverse showed a depiction of the Queen riding a horse while wearing a Guards outfit, very similar to the 1953 Coronation crown. "ELIZABETH II DG," the text reads.

Because the coin's reverse was blank and had no markings or value, some casual collectors today are uncertain about the coin's value and the reason it was produced. The currency actually had a face value of 25p, and in principle it could be used to purchase goods and services. In actuality, the majority of businesses refused to accept the currency, and the majority of individuals saved them as mementos.

The reverse does have an ampulla, a little cup with an eagle motif that was used to anoint the monarch during the coronation, as well as a ceremonial spoon. The United Kingdom's heraldic flowers and the Crown of St. Edward are depicted in the exterior design.

Arnold Machin created the coin the sculptor most known for the Queen's likeness that may still be seen on postal stamps and coins dating back to 1968.

1953 Elizabeth II 5 Shilling, Commemorative Crown

Made to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, this five-shilling piece features an obverse design by the sculptor and engraver Gilbert Ledward RA. It features a portrait of Her Majesty mounted on her horse Winston, with The Queen dressed in her uniform as Colonel in Chief of the Grenadier Guards.

The reverse design features the four quarters of the Royal Arms, each depicted within a shield. In between each shield is one of the four emblems of the home nations – a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek – ¬and in the centre of the design is a crown. Inscribed around the edge of the coin are the words ‘FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU’, which were included in the pledge of allegiance made by His Royal Highness Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh to The Queen during the coronation ceremony.
