2023 British Monarchs King Henry VIII

Henry VIII was a prominent monarch of British history, who reigned for almost four decades. He was born on June 28, 1491, to Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and became king upon his father's death in April 1509. Henry was known for his love of grandeur and his lustful tendencies. He married his brother's widow, Katherine of Aragon, but was unable to produce a male heir. His eyes soon wandered to a younger woman, Anne Boleyn, and he declared independence from Rome after the divorce process from Katherine took six years to finalise. He dissolved the Catholic Church in England and seized vast amounts of wealth and property in the process. Henry married a total of six times and was infamous for his beheading of two of his wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. His legacy as a dichotomous character who was both a tyrannical ruler and renaissance prince continues to intrigue historians and the public alike.

Henry VIII became known as ‘Old Coppernose’ due to the debasement of the silver coinage during his reign. To finance his wars, Henry continually debased the silver coins by reducing their silver content and increasing the amount of copper in them. This made the coins appear more copper-coloured, and as a result, the king himself was given the nickname ‘Old Coppernose’.
